Seaside came out third place in volleyball following a three-game sweep over Warrenton Sept. 2.

The Warriors and Gulls both lost in the semifinals of a tournament over the weekend, but decided to play the third-place match Sept. 2, in a regularly-scheduled meeting.

And it didn’t last long, as Seaside scored the win in straight sets, 25-12, 25-12, 25-14.

“Everyone on the team played tough tonight,” said Seaside coach Angie Huntsman. “Danielle Willyard’s blocking dominated at the net.”

Sister Kelly Willyard led the Gulls with nine kills, while Danielle Willyard and Brittany West each added five kills.

The Gulls set the tone right from the start, with three straight service aces from Haylee Dundas to begin the first game.

Warrenton responded with consecutive kills from Libby Biel and kept it close, with a kill by Sophie Thomas forcing a 10-10 tie.

Seaside reeled off five straight points from there, highlighted by a stuff block from Danielle Willyard.

A big hit from Kelly Willyard made it 20-11, and another kill from Danielle off a set from Dundas pushed the lead to 24-11.

Except for a service ace by Warrenton’s Brianna Marsch to start the second game, Game 2 was much the same.

The teams were tied 10-10, when Seaside freshman Jetta Ideue took over at the service line, and served 11 straight points for a 21-10 lead.

Dundas highlighted the third game with a service ace, followed by a back-set for another point and a kill to give Seaside an 18-10 lead.

Thomas set Landree Miethe for a kill as Warrenton tried to rally late, before the Gulls closed out the game and the match.

Dundas led Seaside with 22 assists and six aces, followed by Danielle Willyard with four. Ideue had 11 digs.

Juneau Meyer and Shane Fritter both had goals to highlight a 5-1 win for the Seaside boys soccer team Sept. 11 night at Broadway Field.

The Gulls held a 3-1 lead at halftime, on their way to their second win in a row.

Seaside 31,

Yamhill-Carlton 8

After Seaside posted wins over Yamhill-Carlton in volleyball, boys soccer and girls soccer Sept. 4, the Gulls capped “Yamhill-Carlton Week” with a 31-8 win over the Tigers in a nonleague football game Sept.5.

“It was great to get out of the gate with a win,” said Seaside coach Jeff Roberts. “Despite scoring on our first offensive possession I felt like we were a little slow getting out of the gate. Early turnovers and mistakes cost us the opportunity to take control of the game early.

“I was pleased with a lot of phases of our game but realize there are still a lot of things to clean up,” he said. “We have had a number of young guys without varsity experience step up and perform.”

Seaside’s Calvin Pollard accounted for most of the scoring, with touchdown runs in each of the first three quarters. Sam Beaudoin added another score to give the Gulls an insurmountable 28-0 lead.

Taylor Barnes kicked a 34-yard field goal in the final period. Pollard finished with 181 yards rushing on 21 carries.

“Pollard was a work horse and got some tough yards for us, and I thought (Kevin) LaCoste did a great job of running our offense,” Roberts said.

Hundreds of runners met for one of the coast’s growing cross country meets, Tillamook’s “Ultimook XC Invitational,” held Sept. 5 at the Hydrangea Ranch in Tillamook.

Competing in the 5,000-meter varsity 1A-4A division, the Seaside girls placed eighth with 219 points. Molalla (72) took the team title, followed by Sandy (125), Tillamook (142) and Scappoose (145). Astoria was 17th of the 20 scoring teams.

Out of 165 runners in the varsity race, Seaside senior Charlotte Blakesley placed fourth in 22 minutes, 47 seconds. Sandy’s Grace Knapp had the winning time of 21:44.

Seaside sophomore Josie Smith was 12th in 23:47.

Blakesley was just four seconds off her time from last year, despite having to stop and put her shoe on after losing it in a mud pit.

On the boys’ side, Seaside took seventh in the team standings with 186 points, followed by Astoria (211) in eighth. Warrenton was 15th. Tillamook was the team winner.

Jackson Januik was the top placer for the Gulls, as he covered the course in 18:48 for fifth place out of 195 varsity runners. Teammate Bradley Rzewnicki was eighth (18:52), while Astoria’s Bryce Nurding was 11th in 19:02.

Januik and Rzewnicki improved their times from last year’s race by 29 and 53 seconds, respectively.

“We are really just getting started, and have considerable work to do as we aim for our best performances Oct. 25,” said Seaside coach Neil Branson, referring to the Cowapa League Championships.

The Gulls are the host team for annual 3-Course Challenge, Sept. 20 at Camp Rilea.

Molalla 6, Seaside 1

The Seaside boys soccer team played its second foe in six days from the Tri-Valley League, and once again came up on the losing end.

After a 4-2 loss to Gladstone a week before, the Gulls fell short Sept. 2 at Molalla, 6-1.

Hinton victorious

Seaside High School’s Sam Hinton shot a 1-over-par 73 to win the Sandpines Junior by a single stroke Sept. 2.

The win gave Hinton his second OGA tournament victory of the summer. Hinton had a birdie on each of the nines and only three bogeys on the day.
