Letter: Misrepresenting

I’m writing this letter in support of Steve Dillard, Seaside city councilor, who is being recalled.

It seems that those who have been in support of recalling Dillard are misrepresenting what Dillard’s true heart is. Those involved in the recall are saying that he is for book banning, and against the First Amendment.

I attended the City Council meeting where Dillard presented his concerns about some books in our public library that were of concern for young children. He clearly stated from the very beginning of his presentation that he was not talking about book banning. He was talking about looking into the library policies about appropriate or inappropriate books for young children.

Many of those who spoke against Dillard after his presentation implied he was for book banning. I sat there listening and thought, “these adults do not seem to have good listening skills.” He emphatically spoke that he was not talking about book banning, and yet person after person who gave their three-minute input kept saying book banning had no place in this library. Dillard would agree.

Then, when the petition to recall Dillard came out, the petition stated that Dillard is against the First Amendment. He was concerned about the library’s policy that said children should be treated the same as adults. He is not against the First Amendment!

Allow Dillard to keep his position as councilman, Ward 1, giving him the freedom to express concerns. Vote “no” on the recall.
