Obituary: Larry ‘Jake’ Lynn Jacobs

Larry “Jake” Lynn Jacobs, 84, of Medford, passed away on Aug. 18 at his son’s residence in La Grande. His burial will take place in Eagle Point National Cemetery at 3 p.m. on Sept. 19.

Larry was born on April 23, 1940, in Powell, Nebraska, to Harry and Harriet (Fogg) Jacobs. He resided in Powell, Wyoming; Alameda, California; Lakeland, New Jersey; Brooklyn, New York; Imperial Beach, California; Midway Island; Monterey, California; Honolulu, Hawaii; Gearhart and Medford.

He graduated from Powell High School, and then attended the University of the State of New York. He married his true love of 58 years, Carol Joyce Schultz.

Larry served our country for 25½ years in the U.S. Navy.

Larry worked for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s National Weather Service for 22 years in Astoria and Medford.

He enjoyed camping, boating, hiking, gardening, bird watching, snorkeling and karaoke, and enjoyed watching baseball, football and softball.

He earned the Isaac Cline Award, two Navy Commendation Medals, the Sixth Good Conduct Medal, the National Defense Service Medal and the Navy League Special Achievement Award.

As a weather forecaster, he was stationed on the USS Compass Island when the vessel plotted sonar maps of the ocean floor. He achieved chief aerographer’s mate, providing forecasts for the the commander, U.S. Pacific Fleet while in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii.

He was a member of the Moose Lodge and the Fraternal Order of Eagles.

Larry is survived by his spouse, Carol, of Medford; his son and daughter-in-law, Kraig and Heidi Jacobs, of La Grande; daughter-in-law, Jacque Jacobs, of Salem; sisters, Pat Jones and Barb Werbelow, both of Powell, Wyoming; seven grandchildren, Erik and Elena Jacobs, Zackary and Kylin Jacobs, Phoebe Jacobs, Olivia Jacobs and Savannah O’Connor; one great-grandson, Izaak Jacobs; and 19 nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his son, Erik Cody Jacobs; brothers, Jake Jacobs and Kerm Jacobs; and sisters, Belle Jones and Gwen Baxter.
