Camp Rilea in Warrenton was once again packed full of runners on Sept. 21 as it hosted the 2024 Three-Course Challenge.

Astoria High School’s William Laman and Warrenton High School’s Jayden Warner represented local schools well as they both won their races.

Laman started things off by winning the easy course in a time of 17:10.5. The time was good enough to give Laman a 17-second victory over second-place finisher Carter Sherry, of La Center, Washington.

Joshuah Baker led the Warrenton contingent across the finish line with a 37th place finish and a time of 20:48.0.

Sophomore Recker Harvey, of Astoria, was tasked with taking on the moderate course. Harvey crossed the line in 42nd place with a time of 21:04. He outpaced junior Zach Flock, of Warrenton, who came across the line with a 21:30.4.

The winner of the 5,000 meters moderate course was Brody Will, of Hudson’s Bay, Washington. Will crossed the line in a time of 17:32.3.

For the difficult course, it was Warner blitzing the field. The Warrenton athlete came home in a time of 17:39.4 to win his heat. After starting off with the pack, Warner methodically distanced his competitors and by the time he climbed the last hill for the finishing sprint no one was even close to him. Sammy Connell, of Inglemoor, Washington, finished second in 18:10.9.

The Seaside High School duo of Kyle Weichal and Henry Rollins held their own in the difficult race, finishing 67th and 89th. Weichal crossed the line with a time of 21:20.7, while Rollins came home in 22:03.4.

Noah Kistner, of Astoria, finished in 153rd place in a time of 23:35.5

For the girls, Astoria Froehle, of Astoria, and Clover Bellew, of Seaside took on the easy course. Froehle ran a time of 29:02.3, while Bellew finished with a 29:25.3.

Astoria’s Elizabeth Joli was the top local finisher for the moderate course. Joli finished as the 12th girl with a time of 24:07.7. She was followed by Payten Buckelew, of Warrenton, in a time of 25:09.7. Others in the moderate race were Brenna Qualm and Emma Stevens, of Warrenton, who finished 51st and 60th. Ella Clyde, of Seaside, finished 52nd and Aster Dean, of Astoria, finished 58th.

Seaside’s Maddie Menke just missed a top 10 in the girls difficult course. Menke’s time of 23:23.5 was five seconds behind 10th place finisher Daniela Vazquez-Gonzalez, of Evergreen High School in Washington.
