Thomas Fredrick Sandoz Jr.

Milwaukie

Nov. 21, 1933 — June 15, 2024

Thomas Fredrick Sandoz Jr., 90, died peacefully on June 15 in Milwaukie, surrounded by his family and loving caregivers. He was an avid hiker, accomplished outdoorsman, skilled handyman and persistently kind, gentle, spirit who always made others feel welcome and supported wherever he went.

Tom was born Nov. 21, 1933, in Astoria, to Thomas Fredrick Sandoz Sr. and Jean Gearhart Sandoz.

He graduated from Astoria High School, where he actively participated in theater, athletics and student leadership. Summers were often spent working the fisheries in Alaska with friends and classmates.

He earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees at Stanford University, where he maintained a long-standing alumni affiliation, and he served in Korea for two years as a first lieutenant in the U.S. Army Signal Corps.

Tom moved to Hawaii in 1960 as an executive trainee with Castle & Cooke Hawaii, and subsequently Dole. He married Bobbie Gibson and raised his family there. He later worked both in finance with Dean Witter, and as a trust officer with Bank of Hawaii and First Hawaiian Bank, where he retired in 2008 as vice president of the personal trust department.

Tom returned to the Pacific Northwest, and spent much of his retirement trekking in what became his beloved New Zealand.

Tom is survived by his son, Tay Sandoz and daughter, Danika Sandoz-Wright; daughters-in-law, Stephanie Levin Sandoz and Lisa Sandoz-Wright; grandsons, Nicky Sandoz, Toby Sandoz and Jesse Sandoz; and sister, Sue Miller, nieces, Linda Miller and Leslie Miller-Thomas, and nephew, Ryan Miller, along with their children.

Tom will be remembered at a private family gathering in Oregon.
