Voters in Cannon Beach chose two new city councilors in the November election.

CANNON BEACH — Deanna Hammond, a bakery owner, prevailed in a razor-thin contest for the second at large slot on the City Council in the November election.

The final vote tally showed Hammond up over Mike Bates, an author and former corporate attorney, 30.39% to 30.26%, or by two votes. Erik Ostrander, who helps manage a motel, won the other at large seat with 38% of the vote.

The Clatsop County clerk has certified the election.

“I’m incredibly humbled and honored to have won this tightly contested race,” Hammond said in an email to The Astorian. “I’m deeply thankful for the trust and support of my constituents, and I look forward to serving our community with dedication, integrity, and humility.”

Hammond, who owns Cannon Beach Bakery with her husband, lost a campaign for City Council in 2022.

Hammond and Ostrander have been concerned about the cost and scope of city infrastructure projects, particularly the plan to redevelop a former elementary school into a tourist-related cultural and community center. Bates had backed the redevelopment project.

Voters in November rejected $7.8 million in bond financing to complete the $12.4 million school redevelopment project in an advisory vote the city considers binding.
