Girls softball: Tournament tests Warrenton, Seaside

Spring break for softball teams usually means tournament time.

This’s true for all four local high school softball teams as they travel throughout Oregon and beyond over the next week.

Warrenton and Seaside teams started spring break by staying close to home and playing in the Seaside Spring Break, held Monday and Tuesday at the new Broadway Park Softball Complex. The tournament attracted seven teams, ranging from 2A to 4A, playing in a round-robin format.

Warrenton played three games over a span of two days, while Seaside played two games on Monday and two games on Tuesday.

Warrenton tests new squad

The Warriors have a mix of returners and newbies on their 2025 roster and boast a strong freshman and junior class. The Warriors, playing against Stayton, Clatskanie and tournament host Seaside, lost all three games during but were competitive in two of them.

Warrenton opened with a well-played 3-1 loss to Seaside and then closed out Monday with a 15-1 loss to Stayton.

On Tuesday, the Warriors fell behind 10-0 in a disastrous first inning against Clatskanie but rallied to lose by just one run, 12-11.

Scarlett Anderson and Natalie Davis, two of the Warriors’ five freshmen, showed promise in the tournament. Anderson pitched in all three games, while Davis hit the team’s first home run of the season in the loss to Stayton.

Warrenton will continue their spring break travels with a Friday and Saturday tournament in La Grande.

Seaside splits tourney outings

Seaside beat Warrenton 3-1 in the Seagulls’ first tournament game Monday but then fell to Stayton, 14-4. The Seagulls also split their two games on Tuesday, beating Rainier, 13-2, but then dropping a 14-13 decision to Clatskanie.

Seaside had a well-pitched game by Carly Corder against Warrenton to start the tournament, before younger sister Allie took the mound against Stayton and Rainier. The younger Corder was forced into action after the Seagulls’ other scheduled pitcher, Lydia Klumper, took a ball off her ankle against Warrenton and missed the rest of the tournament.

Though Seaside went 2-2, the team put up 33 runs and showed improved defense from last season. Carly Corder led the Seagulls with nine runs batted in during the four games.

Next up for the Seagulls is a three-game trip to Arizona starting next Monday.
