- Seaside guard Mya Feeney is fouled as she drives to the basket against Henley in a March 14 game in the 4A state basketball tournament. The Seagulls rallied in the game and took a lead into the fourth quarter but fell short, 53-50, and were eliminated from the tournament.
FOREST GROVE — If you were looking for one game to sum up the 2024-25 basketball season for the Seaside girls, the March 14 game at the 4A state tournament would be a good place to start.
The Seagulls were playing in the consolation bracket, one day after a disastrous second half against Stayton in the quarterfinals sent the team to a dispiriting 68-32 loss.
The March 14 game found the Seagulls playing Henley — another team that enjoyed a considerable size advantage over Seaside. And Henley head coach Randy Denson came into the game looking to take advantage of the team’s size, pounding the ball inside with almost every first-half play.
At the end of the first quarter, Henley led by 10. It would have been easy for the Seagulls to pack it in.
Behind a strong third quarter, though, the Seagulls rallied and even took a two-point into the final quarter.
But foul trouble for leading scorer Carly Corder and other Seagull starters took its toll as the game wore on, and Henley won, 53-50, after a last-second three-point shot by Seaside didn’t go in.
“I can’t ask for anything more,” Seaside head coach Marla Olstedt said. “It’s an incredible group of kids, who I wouldn’t trade for anyone else. We battled with a great team and got the shot that we wanted. These girls are resilient, they’re hungry, they’re tired. They’re great friends and they are going to compete in everything that they do.”
“We’re undersized in most games we play in,” she added. “But the girls have learned to take care of their responsibilities. Unfortunately we had some interesting matchups because of the foul trouble we were in, but every girl who stepped on that court gave it everything they had.”
In addition to Corder, Makenna White and Ella Brenden fouled out of the game. Corder’s 19 points led the Seagulls, and Mya Feeney added 11. For Henley, Makayla Schroeder had 24 points and 17 rebounds — including 11 offensive rebounds.
Though the Seagulls season ended on a down note, Olstedt said her team will be hungry next season. With seven juniors as part of this year’s rotation, the Seagulls are set up to make another run.
“A huge piece for next year is playing in this tournament,” Olstedt said. “Understanding how to recover each day and playing four quarters. It wasn’t perfect, but they battled the entire time and I couldn’t ask for anything more.”
The Seagulls finish the season with a 14-10 record.
