Seaside boys stretch winning streak to 10

The Seaside boys basketball team extended its winning streak to 10 with a pair of wins against Astoria and St. Helens and is two wins away from claiming the 4A Cowapa League’s regular season title.
The girls’ team stumbled with a heartbreaking 48-45 loss to rival Astoria on Feb. 18 but bounced back with a 46-37 win the next day against St. Helens. Going into the final few games of the regular season, the Seagull girls hold a slim half-game league lead over the Fishermen — but the Fishermen have taken two of the three Clatsop Clash games against Seaside.
Here’s the roundup as the regular season winds down:
It’s been more than a month since the Seagull boys lost a game, a string that includes three wins against Astoria in Clatsop Clash games. The Seagulls knocked off Astoria on Feb. 18, 53-44, and followed up on Feb. 19 with a 58-43 win against St. Helens.
The Seagulls are 9-1 in league play, 14-8 overall, and hold a half-game lead over Scappoose. The Seagulls have two road games remaining, Feb. 21 at St. Helens (tipoff is 7 p.m.) and Feb. 25 at Tillamook. If they win out, they’ll finish 11-1 in league play and claim the regular-season title.
The girls team wraps up the regular season with a Feb. 21 game at St. Helens; tipoff is at 5:30 p.m. If the Seagulls win that game, they’ll finish with a 7-2 league mark. But Astoria, with two league games remaining, also could finish with a 7-2 record in league play.
Elsewhere in the county:
Knappa
The Knappa girls have claimed the regular-season championship in the 2A Northwest League and will play next in a league playoff game at 4 p.m. Feb. 22 at Vernonia High School. Their opponent has yet to be determined. The Loggers wrapped up the regular season with a 52-49 victory at Nestucca on Feb. 14.
The Logger boys won a league playoff game Feb. 19 against Nestucca, 45-40. The team, now 20-6 overall, has a tough playoff game ahead on Feb. 22 against Portland Christian, with a 23-2 record. That game, at Vernonia High School, tips off at 6 p.m.
Astoria
The Astoria girls have three games remaining in the regular season. On Feb. 21, the team travels to Scappoose for a game with a 5:30 p.m. tipoff. On Feb. 25, the Fisherman host St. Helens; tipoff is at 5:30 p.m. The regular season finale is scheduled for Feb. 28 at Marist Catholic, in a game scheduled to be played at Banks High School. The Astoria girls are 5-2 in league play, 12-8 overall.
The Astoria boys wrap up their season with two games: On Feb. 21, the Fishermen are scheduled to travel to Scappoose for a game with a 7 p.m. tipoff. On Feb. 25, the Fishermen return home for a 7 p.m. game against St. Helens. The Fishermen are 2-8 in Cowapa League play, 4-17 overall.
Warrenton
The Warrenton boys (15-10 overall) won a league playoff game, 55-35, against Riverdale on Feb. 18 to advance to another playoff game Feb. 20 against Neah-Kah-Nie. Results of that game were not available at press time.
The Warrenton girls wrapped up their season with a 55-21 loss at Banks. The Warriors posted a 1-20 record for the season.
