Nurses from seven Providence hospitals across Oregon, including Providence Seaside, have rejected a proposed labor contract with the health provider, and so the state’s longest health care strike will continue.

A news release from the Oregon Nurses Association, the union representing nearly 5,000 striking nurses at Providence’s Oregon hospitals, said that 83% of nurses at the seven hospitals where ratification votes have been tallied rejected the proposals.

Votes are still being cast by nurses at Providence Medford and hospitalists at Providence St. Vincent in Portland. Member of those two bargaining units have until Saturday at 4 p.m. to vote on the contracts.

The Nurses Association said turnout was 92% across the seven bargaining units that have reported results so far.

In a press release, the association called on Providence to return “immediately” to negotiations.

Providence said in a statement that it was “disappointed in the results.” It said it would “explore next steps for these bargaining units with federal mediators” and the Nurses Association.

Nurses at Providence St. Vincent, Providence Portland, Providence Milwaukie, Providence Willamette Falls, Providence Newberg, and Providence Hood River also voted down the tentative agreements.

The Nurses Association said its bargaining teams sent the contracts to its members “to demonstrate our good faith” after Providence said it was the best offer it could make.

“Nurses know Providence can do better and they are committed to continuing this strike until Providence responds to their demands,” the association said in its statement.

Nurses at Providence hospitals and its Portland clinics walked off their jobs on Jan. 10. Although neither side has disclosed details of the tentative contracts, the union has said it’s seeking contract language that assures facilities will have sufficient nurses available at all times. Wages, paid time off and health care options are other key issues.

The Nurses Association represents 115 nurses at Providence Seaside.
