- Austin Palmer (33) shoots for three for Seaside in a Jan. 31 game against Neah-Kah-Nie. Palmer returned to action after a bone bruise sidelined him for a time.
Seaside High School’s boys and girls basketball team remain in the hunt for Cowapa League titles after a pair of wins Jan. 31 against Neah-Kah-Nie.
The girls had to overcome a cold shooting night and a scrappy Pirates team to extend their winning streak to six but had to rally from a halftime deficit to claim a 37-31 victory. The No. 12 Seagulls are 4-0 in league play, 10-6 overall, heading into a key Feb. 6 match at Astoria.
On the boys side, Jan. 31 was a special night for senior Austin Palmer, who returned to the Seagulls lineup after missing time with a bone bruise. Coming off the bench, Palmer drained his first three-point attempt of the night.
Palmer, who also was celebrating his birthday, and Jake White scored in double figures in the team’s 53-35 win. The Seagulls — who have won five straight —are 4-1 in league play, 9-8 overall, headed into Feb. 6’s Clatsop Clash in Astoria.
Results from Thursday’s games were not available by the Signal’s press time.
Astoria
The Astoria girls team is in the midst of a four-game winning streak after posting wins against Oregon Episcopal and Yamhill-Carlton.
The Fishermen took care of Oregon Episcopal 64-25 on Jan. 30, in a game that featured a balanced scoring effort for the Fishermen. Malory Dundas and Kyah Gohr had 16 points, while Emery Young added 13.
The Fishermen returned to the court a day later, Jan. 31, to beat a talented Yamhill-Carlton squad, 50-36.
Astoria (2-1 in league, 8-7 overall) now turns its attention to the Feb. 6 rematch against Seaside. The Fishermen will be looking to avenge their Jan. 17 loss.
The Astoria boys fell, 53-42, to Tillamook in Jan. 31 action. The Fishermen dropped to 1-4 in Cowapa League play, 3-12 overall.
Warrenton
The Warrenton boys team posted 25 points in the first quarter of its Jan. 30 game against Rainier and cruised to a 70-33 victory at home.
Warrenton saw every player who suited up score in the game. Odin Wilson led the way with 11 points, Calvin Olson had nine and sophomore Aaron Neahring added eight.
The win boosted the Warriors’ league record to 5-2 (12-7 overall). The team is in third place in the Coastal Range League, behind Banks and Neah-Kah-Nie. The Warriors have one game remaining against both Neah-Kah-Nie (Feb. 7) and Banks, in the regular-season finale on Feb. 13.
It’s been a year of injuries and rebuilding for Warrenton girls basketball. A number of the team’s players have suffered season-ending injuries and its depth has been tested all year.
In a Jan. 30 game against Rainier, the Warriors kept it close for the first half, but eventually fell, 45-32. Emma Stevens led Warrenton with 14 points.
The team is 0-7 in league, 1-15 overall.
Knappa
A Seth Duman shot with eight seconds remaining propelled Salem Academy to a 44-43 Saturday win over the Knappa Loggers. Freshman Noah Burns contributed 23 points for the Crusaders.
The nonleague loss snapped the Loggers’ five-game winning streak and dropped the team to a 17-4 overall record. The team is 9-1 in Northwest League play, with its only league loss to first-place Portland Christian. The Loggers can avenge that loss with Feb. 7 home game against Portland Christian.
The Knappa girls team (9-1 in league, 15-5 overall) has been idle since a 51-32 win Jan. 29 at Faith Bible/Life Christian. Weather forced the cancellation of a Feb. 4 game at Columbia Christian, but the team is scheduled to host Portland Christian on Feb. 7.
