Prep basketball roundup: Seaside boys, girls open league play

Seaside’s prep basketball teams entered league play Friday, Jan. 10 with a pair of games at home against Scappoose. The girls team notched a victory, but the boys stumbled.
The girl Seagulls played tough defense against Scappoose to post a 47-30 win and improved their overall record to 6-6.
On the boys’ side, the Indians spoiled the return of Seagull senior Austin Palmer, with a 55-35 victory.
The Seaside boys team, now 0-1 in league and 4-8 overall, will try to grab its first league win at home Friday, Jan. 17 against Astoria. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. The Fishermen (3-8 overall) opened league play on Tuesday, Jan. 14, with a 54-48 victory over Tillamook.
The Seaside boys then will travel to St. Helens for a league game Wednesday, Jan. 22. Tipoff is at 5:30 p.m.
The Seagull girls continue their conference campaign with a pair of games in the next week: They’l host Astoria on Friday, Jan. 17. Tipoff is at 7 p.m. The game will be Astoria’s first in league play, after a date against Tillamook was canceled on Tuesday, Jan. 14.
The girls then will hit the road for a Wednesday, Jan. 22 game at St. Helens. Tipoff is at 7 p.m.
Around the county
The Warrenton boys team has won its first two league games, a 59-25 victory over Rainier on Jan. 10, followed by a hard-fought 61-56 win at Corbett on Jan. 13. The team was scheduled to take its 9-5 overall record into a Thursday, Jan. 16 home game at 6 p.m. against Yamhill-Carlton (0-3 league, 3-12 overall). Results of that game were not available by press time.
The Warrenton boys then hit the road for a Monday, Jan. 20 game at Neah-Kah-Nie (2-0 league, 7-4 overall). Tipoff is at 6 p.m.
The Warriors, in the midst of a busy stretch that sees them play four times over nine days, then return home for a home game Wednesday, Jan. 22 against Riverdale. Tipoff is at 6 p.m.
The Warriors girls team is almost as busy, with a home game scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 16 against Yamhill-Carlton (2-1 league, 11-2 overall). Results of that game were not available at press time.
The Warrior girls then have a 7:30 p.m. Monday, Jan. 20 game at Neah-Kah-Nie (0-2 league, 8-4 overall), and a 7:30 p.m. Wednesday game at home against Riverdale (1-2 league, 9-5 overall).
The Warrior girls (0-2 in league, 1-10 overall) most recently lost a pair of road games, falling 50-31 at Rainier Friday, Jan. 10 and then losing to defending state champion Corbett on Monday, Jan. 13, 59-37.
The red-hot Knappa boys team won its 10th straight game on Wednesday, Jan. 15 with a dominating 67-31 win at home against Columbia Christian.
The Loggers won a 79-65 double overtime thriller against Faith Bible on Friday, Jan. 10 and followed up with a 59-11 thumping of Vernonia/Jewell on Monday, Jan. 13.
Next up for the Loggers (4-0 in league and 12-2 overall): A 7:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 17 match against No. 1-ranked Portland Christian and a home date on Tuesday, Jan. 21 at 7:30 p.m. at Clatskanie.
The Loggers’ girl team has a four-game winning streak of its own going, after beating Columbia Christian 85-24 on Wednesday, Jan. 15. The Loggers’ 85 points marked a season high for the team, now 4-0 in league and 10-4 overall.
Earlier, the Loggers beat Faith Bible, 59-35, on Friday, Jan. 10 and claimed a 39-25 win over Vernonia on Monday, Jan. 13. Next up: A game against Portland Christian at 6 p.m. Friday and a 6 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 21 game at Clatskanie.
