Astoria

Aug. 11, 1942 — Nov. 18, 2024

Warren “Buck” Earl Skaggs, 82, passed away peacefully at his home on Nov. 18.

He was born to Warren and Bessie Skaggs in Culver City, California, on Aug. 11, 1942. He moved to Astoria in October 1944 with his parents, sister, grandparents and two aunts.

Buck attended Olney Grade School and Astoria High School. Buck married Bonnie Fitzell in 1972 at Lake Tahoe, California. They settled down on the family homestead in Astoria (Kissville).

Warren was called “Buck” to family and friends, and was employed at the Wauna Paper Mill starting in 1965. He worked up to paper machine tender and retired in February 2000.

Buck was an avid steelhead fisherman, drag car racer, gun collector and all-terrain vehicle (ATV) rider. He loved building trails with his friends for them and others to ride their ATVs on. He also enjoyed reading war and Western novels and listening to audio books.

Buck and Bonnie took 10 cruises around the world and saw many countries that he liked reminiscing about.

He would help Bonnie with her Astoria Sunday Market craft booth setup and stay with her until closing.

Buck was preceded in death by his wife, Bonnie; his parents, Warren and Bessie Skaggs; and his son, Danny Jones.

He is survived by his daughter, Julie (Bryan) Lundberg; son, Randy (Jodi) Jones; stepson, Corey (Trina) Fields; 12 grandchildren; three great grandchildren; sister, Dianne (Robert) Palmrose, of Salem; and cousins, Jon Gustafson, Bob Steiner and Carolyn Ryan.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date at the Olney Grange.

Hughes-Ransom Mortuary and Crematory was in charge of the arrangements.
