Seaside High School enters the season with a new coach as Natalie Chrisman takes over the swimming program.
The Seagulls have a good mix of returning and new swimmers. Mika Cannon comes back as the leader of the boys side and he had a good opening day performance at the Nygaard Invitational at the Astoria Aquatic Center last weekend. Cannon won the 50-yard freestyle in a time of 25.53, while also leading the Seagulls relay teams. On the girls side, Kayla Reckmann was the leading finisher among the local swimmers in the 200-yard freestyle. Her time of 2:40.22 was good for fifth place.
The Seagulls team of Faith Handy, Ella Crater, Reckmann and Ellie Smith had a solid debut performance in the girls 200-yard freestyle relay, as they finished second behind Astoria.
Overall, both the Seagulls girls and boys finished in sixth place. The performance gives the Seagulls a starting spot to build throughout the season.
Seaside girls basketball holds their own
The Seaside girls basketball team enters the new season with high expectations as they lost just one starter from last season’s roster. The Seagulls traveled to Crook County last weekend to take part in a star-studded tournament.
Seaside dropped their opening game to a resurgent Baker, 51-45. The Seagulls defeated Marshfield, 56-51, then fell to 5A Bend, 52-28.
