Seaside High School football unleashed the offense Oct. 25 against St. Helens.
The Seagulls racked up 465 yards and 63 points on just 42 plays during their 63-6 knockout of St. Helens.
Quarterback Zayden Anderson had his best game of the season as he went 8/10 for 171 yards and four touchdowns through the air. Anderson spread the wealth as he hit Ryder Jackson, Jordan Westerholm, Hayden Halsen and Barett Blodgett for scores. Jackson also had 93 yards and a rushing touchdown.
A pair of sophomores also had nice games for Seaside as Efrain Ramirez saw time at running back and got into the end zone, while Halsen had an interception return for a touchdown in addition to his one receiving.
After losing three straight during a tough middle-season stretch, the Seagulls have now won three in a row to improve to 5-3. Seaside has one more game remaining against No. 13 Tillamook on Nov. 1. That game will be for both second place in league and seeding in the 4A playoffs.
Jewell/Vernonia football surprises Knappa
Jewell/Vernonia ended Knappa’s league title hopes as they thrashed the Loggers 38-8 on Oct. 25.
This was a huge win for Jewell/Vernonia as they entered the game winless in league and also gave their seniors a send-off on senior night.
The victory moves Jewell/Vernonia to 2-6 on the season with one more game left against Gaston.
Seaside soccer had highs and lows last week
Seaside High School boys soccer finally stopped their losing streak as they defeated St. Helens 1-0 on Oct. 24.
Seaside girls soccer stopped their losing skid at three games after a 2-2 draw away against St. Helens on Oct. 24. After losing to the Lions 2-0 at Broadway Field, Seaside went home with a positive result in the rematch.
The bright spots came after a clean sweep for Astoria High School soccer in the Clatsop Clash on Oct. 22. Both the boys and girls teams traded 1-0 victories over their rival Seaside at Broadway Field.
The Astoria girls completed a two-game season sweep of their Cowapa League rivals behind a first-half goal from freshman Cadence Sopko. Seaside had chances and very nearly tied things at one with about six minutes left in the game as they had a shot hit off the cross bar.
After losing the season series last year, Astoria returned the favor to keep their great year going.
As for the boys, Astoria got revenge on Seaside after losing 2-0 earlier in October.
Not only was this round two of the Clatsop Clash, but it was also Seaside’s senior night. Behind a penalty kick goal from Edwuard Lepe Ramirez and stout defense, the Fishermen spoiled their rivals night and extended Seaside’s losing streak to four games.
Seaside volleyball finishes season winless
Though Seaside High School volleyball finished the season 0-20, it doesn’t mean the Seagulls didn’t gain experience throughout.
Seaside entered the 2024 season with six freshmen, one sophomore and just three seniors, so it was always going to be a rebuilding year for the program. Though the Seagulls would have loved to win a game for the seniors, the future looks bright as the program has a lot of freshmen and sophomores waiting to take over in the coming years.
