- The U.S. Coast Guard held a commissioning ceremony on Oct. 24 in Seattle for the fast response cutter Florence Finch, one of three planned for homeporting in Astoria. The cutter is named for Florence Ebersole Smith Finch, a Filipino American who was part of the resistance against the Japanese occupation of the Philippines during World War II. Finch, who joined the U.S. Coast Guard Reserves after the war, was posthumously awarded the Congressional Gold Medal at the commissioning ceremony.
