- Cross-country runners from across the region are having strong seasons.
The good season for local high school running continued last weekend at the Champoeg and Run with Neil invitationals.
Warrenton and Knappa high schools ran at Champoeg, while Astoria and Seaside traveled to Scappoose for the Run with Neil.
Warrenton’s Jayden Warner, and the Knappa boys team, had another good week of performances. Warner improved on his personal and school-record time running a 15:29.4 over 5,000 meters. This was a slight improvement on his previous personal best of 15:32.1. The time was good enough for a fourth-place finish.
Knappa’s Wyatt Jacobson clocked a 16:14, which was a new personal best. He came home in 10th place and was followed by Joshua Peterson and Oskar Peitsch, in 32nd and 37th. Orrin Jacobson and Gavin Jasper were the other two scorers for the Loggers as the boys team finished sixth out of 21 teams.
Knappa also led the way for the girls contingent with Emma Jackson and Aemilia Graham being the top two scorers at 47th and 50th. They were followed by Mylie Lempea, Kiya Roe and Zoey Lackey. The Loggers’ girls came home 12th out of 19 teams.
Payten Buckelew led Warrenton with a 66th-place finish. She was followed home by Brenna Qualm and Emma Stevens in 100th and 101st place. Both Qualm and Stevens ran personal best times of 24:14.30 and 24:15.10.
Laman and Menke victorious once again
William Laman, of Astoria, and Maddie Menke, of Seaside, were the winners of the Run with Neil Invitational on Oct. 12.
Just like he did in their first matchup, Laman outpaced Taj Forney, of Scappoose, to claim the victory. Laman’s time of 16:43.7 was a new personal best. Freshman Cody Hewitt also had a strong race for the Fishermen as he set a personal best of 21:29.9 over the 5,000 meter course.
Seaside was led by the sophomore duo of Kyle Weichal and Henry Rollins. Weichal and Rollins came home 13th and 14th. Weichal clocked a season-best time of 19:13.00, while Rollins ran a personal best of 19:20.40.
For the second weekend in a row, Menke outran Hillsboro’s Adelynn Williams in the girls race. After a near photo finish at the Ridgeline Invitational on Oct. 5, the two runners separated themselves from the pack as Menke ran a 20:08.60 to a 20:17.40 for Williams. Menke’s teammate Ella Clyde had a strong race as she ran her best time of the season. Clyde crossed the line in 12th place with a time of 23:59.70.
Astoria duo Elizabeth Joli and Aster Dean finished in 13th and 15th place. Joli ran a time of 24:11.40, while Dean clocked in at 24:19.50.
