It was not a happy home opener for Seaside High School football as they struggled in all parts of the game against Banks in their 32-14 loss on Sept. 13.

Turnovers were the difference in this game as the teams were pretty much even in total yards. Seaside had 223 yards and Banks had 236, but five Seaside turnovers led to points for the Braves all night.

Banks picked off Zayden Anderson three times — one that was returned for a touchdown. They also forced two fumbles and had a punt return for a score.

Seaside will have a chance to put this game behind them as they play host to Marist Catholic in a rematch of last year’s state semifinal on Sept. 20.

Jewell football shut out

Jewell/Vernonia football were blanked by Central Linn 44-0 in a nonleague game on Sept. 13. The team returns home to host Clatskanie in the opening of league play.

Astoria volleyball overcomes Seaside

Sept. 12 was the first Clatsop Clash of the year as Astoria High School and Seaside High School volleyball teams faced off in Seaside.

Astoria were looking to keep their momentum going after defeating defending league champion Tillamook in straight sets, while Seaside were looking to spoil the party. The Fishermen won the match in straight sets, but they had to work for it.

Despite having six freshmen on their roster, Seaside battled hard throughout the match and pushed Astoria to the limit in the third. Seaside controlled much of the set, only to see Astoria storm back late to take it 26-24. After losing the first two sets by scores of 25-9 and 25-16, the young Seagulls battled and improved throughout the night.

Kyah Gohr once again led the Fishermen in kills with 10. She was also 11/11 from the service line with four aces. Emery Young had five kills, and was 18/20 from the service line with six aces. Sofia Nygaard was third in kills with three, while Maddie Wilkin went 15/17 from the service line and had three aces.

Jewell volleyball falls short

Jewell had a home game against undefeated Willamette Valley Christian on Sept. 12.

Though the Blue Jays lost the match, they were able to win the second set 25-16. Willamette won the first set 25-17, the third set 25-20 and the fourth set 25-23.

Jewell opened league play on Sept. 11 with a win against Livingstone Adventist Academy, snapping a four-game losing streak. Jewell won the first set 25-12, the second set 25-21 and the third set 25-8.
