June 24, 1978 — June 20, 2024
Born on June 24, 1978, David N. Whisenhunt died tragically just days before his 46th birthday on June 20.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Karen Whisenhunt, and his brother, Michael Sheffels. Known to most as Dave, he is survived by his children, Alona, 17, and JD, 14; his father, Charles Whisenhunt, and his wife; his siblings, Pam Sheffels Bedynek and Steven Sheffels; and his former wife, Allison, with whom he shared 22 years of marriage; and many more beloved extended family members.
Dave’s compassion and generosity were evident to all who knew him. He was the kind of person who would literally give the shirt off his back if he thought you needed it. His laugh was contagious, and while his puns often made us groan, they always made us giggle.
Dave was born and raised in various communities in Montana, Wyoming and other locations. In adulthood, he made friends throughout Oregon and Cincinnati, Ohio. Most recently, he explored Southeast Asia with his longtime friend, Ben Gimbel.
He preferred the outdoors to urban settings, and felt most at peace in the forest near a mountain. Dave was incredibly smart, and could fix anything. He exemplified a strong work ethic, respected all living things and believed deeply in equity and integrity.
When not at work, Dave cherished time with his family. They could often be found walking dogs, reading, watching comedies, building Legos or playing games.
In their younger years, Alona and JD frequently colored the turtle tattoos on Dave’s arms while in waiting rooms. Dave’s love for his children profoundly influenced the remarkable people they are becoming, and his memory will continue to do so.
Dave loved animals, especially dogs. He studied dog training and was volunteering at the local animal shelter with JD. Donations in his memory can be made to the Clatsop County Animal Shelter.
