Letter: A fair-minded person

Seaside citizens were concerned that the content of some of the children’s books in the library were inappropriate. They brought their concerns to City Councilman Steve Dillard, as the City Council oversees the library.
Councilman Dillard took his constituents’ concerns seriously and brought them to the council, recommending they review the books and their concerns. This resulted in public testimony regarding the books’ subject matter and age appropriateness. This started a firestorm of accusations aimed at Councilman Dillard. Claims were made that he wanted to ban books.
As a parent, citizen and advocate for sexually abused children, I feel it is important to be informed about what is being presented to children of all ages in our libraries and schools. After attending Seaside City Council meetings and speaking with Dillard, it is clear he has no interest in banning books.
However, he is concerned about the safety and welfare of children of all ages. He is clearly a fair-minded person, committed to hearing the concerns and fairly representing the citizens in Seaside and resolving their valid concerns.
I find it very unfortunate, and unfair, that Councilman Dillard has been repeatedly misrepresented, resulting in a vote to recall him as councilman by a small group of emotionally charged people. It is my sincere hope the majority of Seaside citizens will recognize this, and vote to retain Dillard as the fair-minded, concerned councilman he is.
