Columbia Memorial Hospital has raised $5 million toward its ambitious expansion project, marking the halfway point in a $10 million capital campaign.
The project, which is expected to break ground later this year, involves construction of a new facility and the remodel of the existing building off Exchange Street in Astoria. The expansion will focus on upgrading patient spaces and creating a resilient campus that can withstand extreme weather and natural disasters.
The capital campaign reached its latest milestone with the help of a $2 million donation from CareOregon, made on behalf of its subsidiary, Columbia Pacific Coordinated Care Organization. The organization oversees the Oregon Health Plan, the state’s Medicaid program, in Clatsop, Columbia and Tillamook counties.
The $2 million grant will fund the installation of two “safer rooms” in the hospital’s emergency department. The rooms are designed for patients presenting in behavioral health crises and include precautions to prevent self-harm or accidental harm.
“We’re really excited about the opportunity to contribute to the construction of these safer rooms,” Mimi Haley, the executive director of the Columbia Pacific Coordinated Care Organization, said in a statement. “It fit perfectly with the priority of behavioral health for both CareOregon and Columbia Pacific. This project will benefit the whole community.”
The second-largest donation came from Shawn and Paula Teevin, who gave $500,000 to the expansion. Shawn Teevin is the president of Teevin Bros Land and Timber Co., based in Knappa.
The project is expected to cost upward of $250 million.
