CANNON BEACH — Plans for a new City Hall and police station have reached a milestone after the City Council approved design concepts.
The City Council in June voted to move forward with rebuilding City Hall over the existing location on E. Gower Avenue downtown and building a new police station at the city’s Tolovana cache site east of U.S. Highway 101.
Estimated at $25 million, the new buildings would replace the existing 70-year-old complex, which was originally constructed to store building materials and has failed to meet the needs of city staff.
The City Council last week unanimously approved design concepts for the buildings prepared by Portland-based design architect CIDA Inc. The concepts will continue to be fleshed out as the projects move into the design development phase.
“I am excited about continuing to make progress on a new City Hall and police station for our community,” Mayor Barb Knop said in an email.
The design concept favored by the City Council for City Hall features a single-story, wood-framed design with a combination of cedar siding and shakes. A main entry courtyard, canopy overhang and an angled council chamber would sit at the front of the building.
The angle of the council chamber would provide a view of Haystack Rock.
The building would come in at over 10,000 square feet, similar to the size of the existing building.
Some accessible parking could be added near the entry, with most of the parking in the back of the building, where the staff entrance would be located.
The design concept approved for the police station features a similar aesthetic to City Hall.
The more than 5,000-square-foot building would feature a combination of cedar shakes and siding.
Public parking would be located off of U.S. Highway 101, along with a secured parking lot for staff and police vehicles.
