- Restore Oregon has found a new home for the Jantzen Beach carousel.
The Jantzen Beach carousel will not be coming to Astoria.
On Sept. 12, Restore Oregon announced that the historic carousel will find its new home in The Dalles at the site of the National Neon Sign Museum.
The carousel, designed by C.W. Parker, was initially installed in Venice, California, in 1921, before relocating to the Jantzen Beach Amusement Park in 1928. After 40 years in the park, it was moved to the Jantzen Beach Mall, where it stood until the mall closed in 2012. Mall owners then moved the carousel into storage and donated it to Restore Oregon, a Portland-based nonprofit that focuses on protecting Oregon’s historic places.
Marianne Monson, an author and president of The Writer’s Guild, and Constance Waisanen, a financial consultant, led the charge to bring the carousel to Astoria and submitted a proposal to Restore Oregon.
However, Restore Oregon opted to install the carousel in The Dalles instead, pointing to the convenience of the museum facilities available at the National Neon Sign Museum.
“I was impressed with the proposal from The Dalles because it is going into part of a preexisting museum structure, which is really good that they are not going to have to start from scratch, so I think it makes sense,” Monson said. “Obviously, I would have loved to have seen it in Astoria, but I really think that the carousel itself is just an incredible piece of Oregon history.
“I mostly wanted it to be rebuilt and housed and displayed so that the public could use it again, so I’m really happy to see that going forward.”
