- Unless a new location is secured, the Spay and Neuter Thrift Shop will close.
Spay and Neuter Thrift Shop, a nonprofit based in Seaside, may close after receiving notice they will need to vacate their location by September.
The thrift shop, which has been in operation for more than 40 years, provides discount coupons to spay and neuter pets in Clatsop County. The volunteer-run organization also offers education about responsible pet ownership.
Spay and Neuter Thrift Shop is located inside the Gilbert Building. In October 2021, Seaside businessman Masudur Khan purchased the building.
Kari Douma, the thrift shop’s secretary and vice president, said the shop was verbally notified in May by building managers that they would be receiving a notice in June that they would need to leave by September.
A representative from Khan Properties, which is also owned by Khan, confirmed that businesses on the side of the Gilbert Building where the thrift shop is located would need to vacate for remodeling.
“We don’t have a place to move,” Douma said. “We’re just telling people in the community that, you know, to keep their eyes out for anything that might be for rent.”
She added that the shop would need to relocate to space that would be equivalent to the shop’s current space — approximately 3,000 square feet in size. Douma said that the nonprofit is also concerned about finding an affordable space.
With the space required for the shop, Douma said that other locations in Seaside are outside of the nonprofit’s budget.
Spay and Neuter Thrift Shop has stopped taking donations, and unless a new location is secured, the shop will close.
