Letter: Need for bus service

Published 2:00 pm Monday, April 24, 2023

As a legally blind individual, I have come to rely on the Sunset Empire Transportation District bus service as a lifeline to access necessary appointments and run errands. Additionally, my husband, a disabled veteran who suffers from vestibular inner ear disorder, is my primary caregiver and when his health declines, he is unable to drive. On those days, I use the bus to attend appointments and run necessary errands for myself and my family.

The recent decision to suspend bus service in Clatsop County has left me and many others in a state of uncertainty and vulnerability. It is not only an inconvenience, but a significant barrier for individuals with disabilities or limited access to transportation. The loss of reliable and accessible public transportation creates a ripple effect throughout the community, impacting employment, education and overall quality of life.

I urge the community and our elected officials to come together to find a solution that addresses this issue and provides access to reliable public transportation for all. It is essential that we prioritize the needs of those in our community who rely on this service.
