Letter: Reopen trail

Published 7:01 am Tuesday, April 11, 2023

The Angora Hiking Club was organized in 1921 at a time when outdoor adventures became popular on the North Coast. In years past, a requirement of membership in the Angora Club was a successful climb to the top of Saddle Mountain, the tallest point in the Coast Range.

In recent years, the traditional Saddle Mountain hike was an annual, optional offering for members. Saddle Mountain has great historic and symbolic importance for the Angora Hiking Club and native people in the region.

We understand that the Saddle Mountain trail has been closed for nearly three years due to the pandemic, trail deterioration and facility issues. Understanding the challenges of allocating resources for repair and restoration of the trail for public access, the Angora Club heartily supports reopening of the Saddle Mountain trail as soon as possible.

The Angora Club would also consider offering volunteers from the organization to help, where feasible, with trail restoration and maintenance.
