Women’s History Month

Katie McCloud, the CEO of the Seaside Chamber of Commerce, heralded Women’s History Month in Seaside by highlighting the achievements of local businesswoman and entrepreneurs in the community. McCloud’s series became an award-winning social media campaign with the Oregon Chamber of Commerce. The proclamation described the month of March as honoring women and girls who have “shaped our progress and strengthened our character as a people.”

Town hall in Gearhart

“Compassion.” “Education.” “Integrity.” “A patient person with a small-town vibe.”

These were among the characteristics Gearhart residents said they sought in a new police chief. About 40 people gathered Tuesday afternoon for the first city town hall meeting since the pandemic.

Gearhart’s first town hall meeting since the pandemic drew a crowd, as residents considered necessary qualities in a new police chief. Recruiters from GMP Consultants organized the listening session to assist the city with the job search after longtime chief Jeff Bowman announced his retirement. He has served as chief since 1986.

Going remote

Should councilors be able to participate remotely? Should they be able to vote while outside of council chambers? How many in-person meetings should they be required to attend?

When the world went “remote” during the COVID pandemic, the city government changed forever.

The Seaside City Council took aim at 20th century policies on Feb. 27, delivering changes to the city’s Zoom meeting policy for public officials and streamlining the way council packets are delivered.

While the days of isolation are in the past, at least for now, the city has never addressed the ability for a council member for the city to hold a hybrid meeting, which is an in-person meeting with officials participating over Zoom.

See which way the city is headed.
