The Cannon Beach Rural Fire Protection District will take over management of the city’s lifeguard program.

Last May, the City Council approved an intergovernmental agreement between the police department and fire district that allows fire district staff and volunteers to bookend the typical lifeguard season. It also allowed the fire district’s lifeguards to fill shifts during the summer when needed.

The city said the program was successful and both the city and fire district would like to see it continue for the upcoming season.

On Feb. 14, the City Council approved an agreement that will allow the fire district to take over the hiring, training and management of all lifeguards and be reimbursed by the city for lifeguard services.
