- A man later identified as Jeremy Labonte was transported by U.S. Coast Guard after a water rescue on Feb. 3.
A Victoria, British Columbia, man suspected of criminal activity and wanted as a fugitive out of British Columbia was arrested on Feb. 3 in Seaside hours after he was rescued from a capsizing boat near the mouth of the Columbia River.
The events on Feb. 3 followed a report to Astoria police on Feb. 1 that Jericho Labonte, 35, left a dead fish on the porch of the house made famous by the 1985 film, “The Goonies.”
He also allegedly placed stickers over camera lenses outside the residence and returned to remove the fish.
Labonte allegedly stole a boat from the West Mooring Basin in Astoria and took it past the Columbia River Bar into the Pacific Ocean on Feb. 3. A Warrenton man who owns the boat Labonte was piloting reported it stolen, according to police.
The U.S. Coast Guard received an emergency broadcast from the vessel, P/C Sandpiper, and sent boat and air crews.
Hazardous surf made rescue by boat dangerous, officials said, so the air crew lowered a rescue swimmer. The vessel capsized, but the rescue swimmer was able to safely recover Labonte.
Labonte was flown back to the Coast Guard base, where he was met by emergency crews and taken to Columbia Memorial Hospital in Astoria.
Police searched for Labonte after he was released from the hospital on Feb. 3.
Seaside Police, with officers from the Clatsop County Sheriff’s Office and Oregon State Police, arrested Jericho Labonte at 7:35 p.m. on Feb. 3. He was taken into custody without incident at the Helping Hands Warming Shelter in Seaside, police said in a news release.
Police arrested Labonte at the warming center in Seaside, where he was staying under an alias, for theft in the first degree, endangering another person, criminal mischief in the second degree and unauthorized use of a vehicle.
