- More than 150 people received services at this year's Project Homeless Connect event.
Over 20 social services providers were available at Project Homeless Connect, held at the Seaside Civic and Convention Center on Jan. 31.
Volunteers from Clatsop Community College’s nursing program served hot wrap sandwiches to visitors. CODA offered addiction treatment resources and information. Sunset Empire Transportation District provided free rides for everyone on “rider appreciation day.” Seaside’s Community Service Officer, Paul Knoch, offered details on overnight camping permits.
Free haircuts, dental care and medical services were offered by the Oregon Health Authority, Providence Seaside Hospital, Columbia Memorial Hospital and Columbia Pacific Coordinated Care Organization. The event was sponsored by Clatsop Community Action.
A primary goal of the event is to provide a point-in-time count to determine the county’s homeless population. Those without shelter are processed through an intake system, Viviana Matthews, the executive director of Clatsop Community Action, said. Through the intake system, information is developed to provide an assessment of needs — everything from a haircut to a meal, health plan information, food stamps and connecting with other shelters .
More than 150 people received services at the event, the convention center’s director of sales Tina Eilers said after the event.
“That number is important because it also provides a point-in-time count, or at least part of the the point-in-time count for Clatsop County for financial aid eligibility and from federal assistance for homeless outreach,” Eilers said.
