A new music venue in town is gaining fans, and acts are booked through April. Vanessa and Justin Boone recently opened a music room alongside their cafe, Burly and the Bean, located on S. Roosevelt.

“The local musician family has taken to us quite well,” Justin Boone said. “The scene kind of just took off.”

The musical response from the community has been immediate, with bands from along the Oregon Coast and the Washington Peninsula taking the stage, Boone said.

On Thursdays, from 6 to 8 p.m., a bluegrass band, Small Towne, performs. On Fridays, bands are rotated, with artists like Roostifer, Ted Brainard and Dr. Onion and the No-No Mamas.

“I wanted to create a space where we could have more live entertainment,” Justin Boone said. “ … Now we have a lot of local musicians, even from out of state, coming out.”

The room may also be rented out for private events.

Burly and the Bean will also be offering a new rock program for kids at the coffee shop, which is a six-week music education program designed to help youth from 7 to 18 work together to form a band.

“They’ll be working with three to four different musicians and instructors,” Justin Boone said, learning drums, keyboard, bass, electric and acoustic guitars.

Signups for the program begin Feb. 1 and the course will start March 20. Parents may also sign up for private lessons through February.

The Boones opened their original Burly and the Bean coffee shop in 2015 in San Diego, California, with the goal to make it a community hub and gathering space. They closed that store in 2020 when they relocated to Seaside. They came to the site of the former Human Bean, serving coffee, specialty drinks and sandwiches. The next year, they expanded operations with a cafe on S. Roosevelt at the intersection of Avenue S.

In early 2022, they acquired a neighboring space and transformed it into an entertainment venue for musicians.

They came to an agreement with a new owner, who now holds the lease on the drive-thru and shares the “Burly and the Bean” name.

The Boones will continue to offer a “roast your own” coffee bean experience at the cafe, and invite families with younger children to the play area in the main room.

While they are preparing to apply for a permit to serve beer and wine, customers can bring their own bottles and drink them on the premise with a small corking fee, Justin Boone said.
