The theme of the Emerald Cat Club’s annual show was “Happy Mew Year.” A Cat Fanciers’ Association all-breed championship, premiership, household pet and veteran cat show was held at this year’s event.

Kendell Mar brought his Cornish Rex, Fortune. He has been coming to the cat show for several years from Seattle.

Down the aisle, Brandy Slack and her teenage daughter Brynne played with their entrants, Whiskey Sour and Little Man, entrants in the household pet category.

Brandy Slack runs a cat boarding facility in Portland, and Whiskey Sour was never reclaimed after her owner abandoned her and three siblings at the business. The family bottle-fed them back to health.

Linda Osburn, of Portland, treated her Japanese bobtail, Hatsu, in style. Hatsu resided in an elegant carrier festooned with New Year’s ribbon and beads to mirror the show’s theme.

The carrier held a card that read: “My life is better than yours.”

“They’re just amazing cats,” Osburn said of the breed. “They’re very affectionate. Very sweet. Busy, busy, busy. But at night, they just drop and go to sleep, which is nice.”

Show manager Wendy Heidt of Vancouver, Washington, has been involved with the show for almost 20 years, with her husband, Stephen.

More vendors were at the show, this year, with wares including T-shirts, cat beds, toys and catnip. Registration stood at nearly 130 cats entered, she said, about the same as last year.

Judges evaluated cats in four rings, including short-hair and long-hair specialty breeds and a category for household pets.

Clatsop County Animal Shelter cats served as official greeters and were all available for adoption.
