On Dec. 22, a semitruck overturned on U.S. Highway 101 near the U.S. Highway 26 junction. There was a 27-car pileup that involved 56 people, Clatsop County reported, with some vehicles left at the scene of the incident. 

The crash came during a night of freezing temperatures and icy roads that left more than 2,100 homes without power, and the Astoria Bridge was closed as a result of the severe weather. 

The Oregon Department of Transportation, Cannon Beach police and fire department stabilized the scene until almost 4 a.m., checking on people in their vehicles and distributing blankets, snacks and water, Police Chief Jason Schermerhorn said.

Cannon Beach public works assisted in the city with advising traffic and preventing vehicles from going up the hill, he said.
