Remembrance

Every year in Seaside the American Legion Post presents a Pearl Harbor remembrance. The event has special resonance in Seaside, where so many served. We met John Sefren, 95 years old, who was 14 at the time of the attack. Clatsop County Commissioner John Toyooka recalled his family’s path during the war and their commitment to the nation. The Coast Guard flew a helicopter overhead as Sefren dropped a wreath into the river, in memory of those who lost their lives. Read more here.

Housing, housing, housing

Housing was at the forefront in Seaside, with a task force meeting and housing summit at the convention center. On Dec. 5, Kim Travis of Oregon Housing and Community Service shared ways cities could improve housing opportunities using grants, loans and tax credits. Travis was on-hand the next day when government leaders, private industry and interested residents filled the convention center to hear solutions from along the coast.

“I hope that we will learn from each other,” organizer Erin Skaar, a Tillamook County commissioner, said. “Some aspects of it will be original, because we share employees, but at the same time we each have similar but different constraints. It’s helping everybody see what they can bring. … That’s our challenge.”

Inaccurate data led to incorrect estimates about Gearhart water consumption and projected demand, City Administrator Chad Sweet said.
