Boys basketball: Tigers top Gulls in tournament final

Seaside’s tough non-league schedule continued over the weekend at Junction City, where the Gulls scored a 66-39 win over Newport, before falling to the host Tigers 52-34 in the championship game of the Junction City tournament.
In the Dec. 9 opener against Newport, Seaside’s Ruger Thompson poured in 21 points, with eight points from Austin Palmer, while the Gulls led 22-8 after one quarter, then outscored the Cubs 29-16 in the second half.
Fourth-ranked Junction City turned the tables on Seaside in Saturday’s championship game, building a 16-2 lead after one quarter, and 29-10 by halftime.
Senior Gunner Rothenberger scored 13 for the Tigers, with Sammy Espinoza adding 10. Palmer had 12 and Thompson scored 10 for the Gulls, who host their annual Holiday Classic later this week.
With an experienced roster of six seniors and six juniors, Junction City improved to 3-1.
