Shelter options
With the onset of cold weather, the need for warm and dry shelter for the homeless became a top county need. Follow as Seaside reopens the center on S. Roosevelt Drive, with plans for a second building for emergency overnight stays.
Ten people came to the emergency shelter overnight Nov. 5 and six more used the shelter on Nov. 6. Helping Hands, Clatsop Community Action and other social service and community groups will come together to continue to address the need throughout the winter. Read more here.
Bruising election
The social media, campaign signs and intense pleas for change marked the November election for City Council. The bruising season came to an end in Gearhart with the City Council races showing Dana Gould with the lead for Position 1 and Preston Devereaux with a lead in Position 3 in a race that remains too close to call.
For the four candidates for two seats, the vote was a referendum on the city’s future.
We’ll keep you up-to-date on the Position 3 race, and the city’s top priority, a new firehouse.
Seaside challenge
In Seaside, Tita Montero found a stiff challenge from Dan Schorr in Ward 2. As of this writing Montero leads by 13 votes. Seth Morrisey returns to the council after his victory in the Ward 3 and 4 race, while Steve Dillard will take the Ward 1 seat vacated by Wright, now the mayor.
For this council, the goal will be to maintain the collegiality and team effort that characterized past councils, at the same time acknowledging the issues of homelessness, vacation rentals and affordable housing raised by challengers. Here’s the latest on the Seaside races.
