Seaside backs local option levy for fire department

A local option tax levy for fire equipment and personnel was approved by voters on Tuesday.

The five-year levy — expected to generate $2.3 million — will provide fire apparatus, the purchase of a new training tower and a training and safety officer for the Seaside Fire Department, a role held by David Rankin.

Measure 4-216 is essential for the fire department to maintain its national insurance rating, currently among the lowest homeowner insurance ratings in the region, the city said.

The levy will replace a tax set to expire at the end of the fiscal year. The estimated cost will result in a rate of 33 cents per $1,000 of assessed property value.
