- Gregory replaces Jeff Bowman, who retired in April.
Welcome to the Seaside Signal.
It’s election week with competitive races in Seaside and Gearhart. We’ll bring you all the latest hyperlocal coverage and results.
This week in the Signal:
Over the course of his career, Police Chief Jeff Bowman encountered speeding motorists, illegal fireworks, barking dogs, robbery and property crimes. He provided input and enforcement on the city’s noise ordinance, RV parking and camping rules.
Bowman became Gearhart police chief in 1986. This week he announced his plan to retire in April. In a letter to the mayor and city councilors, he said he had had an outstanding career and wished the best for all of Gearhart’s citizens. Read more here.
Great pumpkin!
While the pumpkin was a mere 1,000 pounds — a bit less than last year’s 300-pound orange behemoth — it still sent plastic ducks and beavers flying more than 130 feet at the annual Halloween Happenin’s event. The pumpkin drop was one of many of the Seaside Downtown Development Association’s holiday events with Trunk or Treat for the kids, a pet parade, and witches paddle on the Necanicum. Pictures and story here.
Veteran’s Day
It was appropriate that with Veterans Day on Nov. 11 that attention should go to those veterans now in need.
Alan Martinez, veterans outreach coordinator for the Veterans Administration VA Portland Health Care System in Portland said his goal was to end veteran homelessness.
“What we can offer the people is access to services,” Martinez said.
He was one of many local, county and state agencies and service providers at the convention center on Nov. 2 for the Clatsop Community Action Veterans Stand Down, offering referrals, health care and housing information for the county’s veterans.
