Letter: Where were Mesch and Devereaux?

Candidates Anne Mesch and Preston Devereaux believe a new firehouse can be built at its current site for $5 million.

Where’s the former Gearhart Elementary School site campaign sign proposing a $5 million firehouse?

Did Mesch and Devereaux remove the sign because their pipe dream wasn’t feasible? They must have experienced a reality check. Here’s the reality they missed. The original bond had a likely interest rate of 1.1%.

Due to inflation and risk assessment valuation, a new bond would likely have a higher rate of 6% or more. Hence, the carrying charge would be much greater. City Ordinance 924 prohibits building a firehouse in the present location. The ordinance would have to be repealed and the comprehensive plan amended.

Public meetings were held regarding these issues. Where were Mesch and Devereaux?

The current firehouse location can’t accommodate future needs without adding a second story. In addition, state House Bill 2605 requires additional extensive structural design and engineering for public buildings in a tsunami zone. There would also be costs to tear down the old firehouse, prepare the site and temporarily relocate the fire department.

This is only one example of Mesch and Devereaux’s lack of knowledge of our community. Brent Warren and Dana Gould have the energy, experience and qualifications needed to keep Gearhart moving forward. Mesch and Devereaux do not.
