Library search

The search for a new Seaside library director just got a little more complicated.

Josh Moorman has served as interim library director since the departure of Esther Moberg, now the Warrenton city manager. Two candidates visited Seaside Library on Oct. 13 for a meet-and-greet with residents. After a meet-and-greet at the library, the city made an offer to one of the executive director candidates.

The candidate declined and an offer was not extended to the second candidate. What’s coming up next? Read more here

Iron Tribe

Reuniting families is the goal of the Iron Tribe Network, which works with the state and county to provide housing for people enrolled in the drug court program working to reunite with their families. They want to bring sober housing to Gearhart for families in recovery. After the Planning Commission determined a zoning change wasn’t necessary, the purchase can move ahead. Read more here

ShakeOut

Seaside City Councilor Tom Horning’s plea to fund upgrades to the city’s bridges coincided with the Great Oregon ShakeOut, part of a national event for earthquake awareness. Seaside’s need is critical:

Cascadia Subduction Zone earthquakes happen about every 500 years, but occur in clusters, Horning said. That cluster is 330 years between earthquakes. It’s been 322 years since the last one. Even a small tsunami could wash away 85% of Seaside’s homes. A bigger tsunami could destroy 95% of the city’s homes.

His plan is to redirect funds from room tax to repairing the city’s most vulnerable bridges. It’s a tall order: distribution of tourism funds is established in Salem and reliant on the Legislature. Horning believes that it’s worth it to try.
