- Electric all-terrain wheelchair: Anyone with mobility impairment, requiring the assistance of wheelchairs, scooters, walkers, canes or crutches, will be able to use these chairs at no charge.
Parade, fireworks and beach wheelchairs for those who cannot walk on the sand are among the Fourth of July holiday events ahead in Seaside.
The lineup begins on Necanicum Drive at 9:45 a.m. The parade runs from 10 to 11 a.m. The route is shortened this year with the start being at the south end of Necanicum. From Necanicum it will turn east on First Avenue, then south on Holladay Drive to Broadway, west to Columbia, east to First Avenue back to Necanicum.
Organizers expect about 40 entrants in the parade.
Seaside’s July Fourth fireworks celebration, funded by donations, begins at 10 p.m. on the Prom. Western Display Fireworks is producer of the 20-minute show, as they have been for “decades and decades,” Heather Gobet, president of Western Display, said.
The show, with planning and purchasing of fireworks, starts almost a year in advance, she said. Fireworks are computer choreographed and fired using the Starfire system. “It’s put together like a puzzle that has to be put together a certain way to have the desired effect,” Gobet said.
Fireworks will be fired from multiple queues, she said, creating a “pyromusical element” to the show using a crew of 12 pyrotechnicians.
“It’s definitely safer,” Gobet said. “It’s really a necessity to provide that level of presentation and certainly to incorporate the music.”
The soundtrack is prepared by Seaside’s Boomer Barbosa of 94.9 The Bridge, with favorites and patriotic songs.
Throughout the weekend, David’s Chair Outdoor Mobility Systems will bring seven electric all-terrain wheelchairs to the Promenade between Broadway and Avenue A free for mobility challenged guests. David’s Chair mission is to empower mobility impaired people to enjoy outdoor activities.
“We see the need to serve the Portland Metro area and so many people want to use our chairs at the beach,” Steve Furst, the founder and CEO, said. “We want to help create lasting memories and we figured that we could do that on Independence Day and chose Seaside because it is a destination spot and it is close the the Portland Metro area.
Sixteen people are signed up, but, Furst said, “we can handle many more than that. We use two-hour time slots and will be running multiple chairs each slot. We expect that there will be several people that stumble upon us over the weekend so we believe we will provide our services to many more.”
Gearhart
In Gearhart, the holiday begins with a street dance on July 1.
The event began in 2018 as a part of Gearhart’s centennial celebration and returned in 2019. This year’s dance includes music by DJ John Chapman, photo booth snapshots and kids’ face-painting.
On the Fourth, Gearhart’s parade participants line up at 10:30 a.m. between Seventh and 10th on Marion. The parade begins at 11 a.m.
Powered vehicles of all types are prohibited. The parade travels from Marion to Pacific Way, ending at the fire station, where families can enjoy free hot dogs, a dunk tank, firefighter course for kids and firefighter apparel sales.
The event is sponsored by the Gearhart Association and presented by the city and street dance committee.
Cannon Beach
Cannon Beach will celebrate with an Independence Day at 11 a.m., presented by the Cannon Beach Chamber of Commerce.
The parade heads north on Spruce Street from the staging area between Gower and Monroe streets. From Spruce, the parade turns east onto Third and then heads south on Hemlock, disbanding near the American Legion. Kids, bikes, old cars, decorated entries, and walking groups are welcome to enter, with a special invitation to all veterans.
All fireworks are illegal in Cannon Beach.
Other events on the Fourth are the Great Puffin Watch and the used book sale at the Cannon Beach Library.
The puffin watch, sponsored by the Haystack Rock Awareness Program, takes place 8 to 11 a.m. each day from July 1 to July 4. Interpreters will be at Haystack Rock for viewing of tufted puffins, sea stars and sea birds.
The book sale runs from July 1 to July 4. Sale hours are Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
