- Flags flew at half-staff on Tuesday at the Seaside schools campus in memory of Kyle Rieger after his death in a car accident over Memorial Day weekend. Students brought flowers to show their respects.

Gearhart politics
In Gearhart, Mayor Paulina Cockrum stepped down Thursday, citing personal reasons. The resignation comes in the wake of a contentious fire bond vote and calls by opponents for a recall election.
Camp clearing
We spent much of the work week at 10th Avenue and Necanicum in Seaside, the city lot where only a week ago almost 30 vehicles and campers were parked overnight. With the passage of the camping ordinance, which designates a permitted area, clearing of the Necanicum lot began. We’ll be watching as Seaside’s ordinance seeks to meet the need while keeping the homeless out of sight of residents and visitors in a new location at the entrance of the Mill Ponds Natural History Park off of Avenue S.
Tragedy
Our hearts were broken after learning of the death of Seaside High School band director Kyle Rieger. Rieger, only 26, was a composer and instrumentalist whose works have been featured around the globe. Rieger started at Seaside High School in September, arriving from Missouri, and quickly became beloved by students.
