- Proclamation adopted by Seaside City Council.
Seaside City Council issued a proclamation in honor of the city’s first Pride Day celebration.
The proclamation, read by Mayor Jay Barber at the city’s May 23 meeting, supports the right of every citizen to experience equality and freedom from discrimination. The proclamation coincides with Gay and Lesbian Pride Month every June to commemorate the June 1969 Stonewall Uprising in Lower Manhattan.
The proclamation states LGBTQ Americans, “including those who live in our local communities, face discrimination simply for being who they are and for who they love and there remains much work to do to extend the promise of our country to every person making it important for cities like Seaside to stand up and show support all our residents.”
Tessa James Scheller thanked the council for its action.
“It’s a proud day for me and it’s a proud day for a lot of my friends,” they said. “And I consider you many of you, my personal friends as well. I just want to say thank you from the bottom of my heart and to the city of Seaside for taking what I think is a brave, honest step of owning your residents.”
The Sunset Empire Park and Recreation District joined the city in its recognition of the LGBTQ community, reading and unanimously approved the proclamation at its Tuesday meeting.
This was the second consecutive year the district has endorsed the proclamation.
Seaside Pride will be June 25, Marcus Runkle said at the district’s May board meeting. “We will be starting at 12th Avenue at 11 a.m. registration start.”
The walk, which begins at noon, will go down the Promenade to the beach access area. At 1 p.m., participants will meet at Quatat Park for a bring-your-own lunch and community meet-and-greet.
