From the Editor’s Desk:

Welcome to the Seaside Signal. Here’s a roundup of some of this week’s top local stories.

‘No’ to fire bond

“Back to the drawing board” is the verdict from advocates of the Gearhart fire bond. The measure went down at the polls Tuesday by a 2-1 margin. The vote was celebrated by those who saw the cost as too high and the station too far from town. “The ‘no’ vote has prevailed,” bond critic Robert Morey said. “Now is the time for the community and council to come together and support a new fire station with a realistic budget at the current location.”

Owen among finalists

Of the three finalists for general manager of the Seaside Civic and Convention Center, one is well-known locally: Brian Owen, CEO of the Seaside Chamber of Commerce. He’s joined by candidates from Fort Collins, Colorado, and Lakeland, Florida. A decision is expected from City Manager Mark Winstanley this week.

Disturbing trend

On a quiet Saturday night in Seaside A Salem family was shot at by rounds of plastic projectiles, shot at rapid fire from a passing car. The family tells their harrowing story and police chief Dave Ham explains how it may be part of a national social media trend.

We have a big week ahead, with a City Council workshop on homeless camping sites, announcement of a new city manager in Seaside and a first look at candidates for the general manager role at the Seaside Civic and Convention Center.
