Welcome to the Seaside Signal. This week brings the prelude to the May 17 Gearhart firehouse bond vote, budget time at local institutions and much more.
Budget looks past bond vote
At long last Gearhart will decide the fate of a $14.5 million bond to update its fire and police facilities. As the result approaches, the city is threading a needle to meet future needs whatever the decision. “The budget is adopted,” Brent Warren, budget committee chairman said Thursday. “We did it all in one night, in three hours and 20 minutes.” And by the way, stay tuned for May 17, Election Day.

The Astoria Country Club witnessed excitement Seaside senior Carson Kawasoe birdied the first hole of sudden death to win the Cowapa League individual title over defending state co-champion Elliot Lee of Tillamook on Monday afternoon at the Astoria Golf & Country Club. Sports tourism?
Grab the ball and hop on the bus — the Sunset Park and recreation district is banking on a “sports tourism” model at Sunset Recreation Center, the former middle school. With a new strategy report on the facility, the park district will ramp up regional basketball programs, pickleball play. Executive director Skyler Archibald believes the building can be operated sustainably through its programs and services, which not only include sports but space and event rentals.
