Welcome to the Seaside Signal — in every issue we give you the local news you need to know.

Homeless ordinance

Neighbors of the homeless RV camp at 10th and Necanicum are glad at long last that the city will have some teeth to remove the vehicles and campers that have parked there for more than a year. With an overnight permit system coming into place, Seaside can now regulate RV camping to permitted sites. Questions remain: What sites and how many? Will campers be shuttled from one site to another? What about tents, campers, long-term housing and access to services?

Back to Broadway

For the Seaside School District, the clock is ticking on playing field equity. The federal Office of Civil Rights determined the district violated Title IX rules guaranteeing parity between boys and girls’ at Broadway Field. The boys field offered better conditions on and off Broadway Field. After considering plans at Wahanna Field, consultants have concluded that costs and conditions are prohibitive for development there, and they’re returning their sights to Broadway.

They have about one year to do that — and with sports play at Broadway Field through November, the Sunset Empire Park and Recreation District wonders if the fixes — which could include a new turf field — can be accomplished to meet the federal requirements.

New downtown director

The Seaside Downtown Development association has been serving the city’s core since the 1980s. On Thursday they introduced the group’s new executive director Kerri Lambert. Lambert, the manager of the Times Theatre and Public House, represents a new generation as the association looks ahead to the future.
