- With an OK from the city attorney, campaign signs have reached larger and larger dimensions in Gearhart.
Sign wars have returned to Gearhart. After the city attorney gave the OK to a 32-square-foot campaign sign promoting the $14.5 million firehouse bond — four times the sign size limit in the zoning code — the opposition went even bigger. Two 40-foot “vote no” banners are now posted in front of the former elementary school, countering the “vote yes” signs on the corner of Pacific Way. Meanwhile, Gearhart firefighters are making their plea for a station outside of the most dangerous tsunami zone to a new facility off the Highlands.
Seaside students will be the beneficiaries more than $1.5 million in safety upgrades on Spruce Drive leading to the Seaside School District Campus, roadways at the elementary, middle and high school and on streets throughout the school neighborhood. First on the list in a new report, Safe Routes to School, is the intersection of Alder and Spruce, about halfway up the hill to the campus. That’s the only road in and out of the campus, at risk for pedestrians, cyclists and drivers alike. Additional upgrades are listed in the neighborhood and on campus.
And Seaside is getting down to the wire with a new homeless ordinance. With response to the makeshift RV camp at 10th Avenue and in the face of new laws, officials recognize action is imperative. The Homeless Task Force met last week to continue shaping laws that will offer a permit process for overnight campers and RV parking. The task force will present options at the April 11 City Council meeting.
