Rollover accident

Troopers went to U.S. Highway 26 and Wunsch Road Jan. 6 at 11:48 a.m. for a report of a rollover crash. On arrival they saw a blue Volkswagen Tiguan resting on its top; the driver wasn’t injured and refused medical transport. As she appeared impaired she was arrested for driving while under the influence of intoxicants and reckless driving. Susan Ella Myers, 64 of Long Beach, Washington, was taken to Seaside police headquarters for processing. She was released on her own recognizance and returns to court March 9.

Lost control

Police responded to a crash Jan. 7 at 4:35 p.m. on U.S. Highway 101 southbound by Perkins Lane. The driver of a black Mustang accelerated around milepost 10, lost control of the wheel, drove off the shoulder, into an embankment, struck a Camp Rilea sign, and came to rest on its top. A 23-year-old Warrenton man received minor injuries. He was cited for careless driving. His car was towed by Classic Towing.

Dangerous vehicle

Robert Tristan Ibarra, 48, from Friendswood, Texas, was charged Jan. 9 at 11:28 p.m. on U.S. Highway 101 and Sunset Beach Lane with driving while under the influence of intoxicants — alcohol and reckless driving. He was also cited for having an open container of alcohol while driving a car and failure to maintain his lane. A motorist traveling west on Highway 26 near the Highway 101 junction reported a dangerous vehicle turning north onto Highway 101. A short time later a trooper sergeant saw a car matching the reported description traveling north near mile post 13.5. The car left the roadway to the northbound shoulder and struck a power pole. A second trooper responded to the scene along with Clatsop County deputies. Ibarra exhibited signs of impairment and declined to perform a standardized field sobriety test. He was arrested on scene and transported to the Clatsop County Jail where he provided breath samples which revealed a 0.24% blood alcohol content. His damaged car was towed by Classic Towing.

Driving while impaired

On Jan. 11 at 12:28 a.m., on U.S. Highway 101 and Sunset Lane Danielle Leslie Brown, 34 of Warrenton, was charged with driving while impaired by alcohol and marijuana. A family member notified police she was on the road and impaired so they could locate her. Brown was found on the highway near milepost 15; an investigation led to her arrest. Her Toyota Highlander was secured on the side of the road until a family member could come and get it. Brown’s chemical test showed a blood alcohol content of .12%.

Seaside man killed in crash

Oregon State Police and emergency personnel responded Jan. 11 at approximately 3:40 p.m. to a two-vehicle crash on U.S. Highway 26 near milepost 7. Preliminary investigation indicated a 1993 gray Ford Explorer traveling eastbound stopped to turn into a driveway when it was struck from behind by a Peterbilt semi truck driven by a 43-year-old driver from Tigard. Lonnie Meade, 65, of Seaside, sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the semi truck was not injured. The highway was closed for four hours. State police were assisted at the scene by the Seaside Fire Department, the Hamlet Fire Department and ODOT. Classic Towing towed the Peterbilt and Gary’s Towing towed the Explorer. The investigation is ongoing.

Car on fire

A 26-year-old Cannon Beach man was driving a Chevy Suburban on U.S. Highway 101 near milepost 26 Jan. 13 at 8:50 p.m. when it caught fire. Police saw the car traveling at a low rate of speed traveling southbound with its hazard lights on; there was an odor of burning plastic trailing the vehicle. The driver pulled over to the shoulder the same time the car caught on fire; the driver pulled two children from the car while a trooper discharged a fire extinguisher into the engine bay to suppress the fire. The Cannon Beach Fire Department responded and verified the fire was out. No injuries were reported. Gary’s Tow was notified to remove the car from the road.

Suicidal male

Police went to the Sunset Beach area Jan. 17 at 3:10 p.m. looking for a young man whose mother, located in WA, notified police of her son’s mental status. She said the 19-year-old, who lives in WA, made several comments indicating self-harm. Clatsop County deputies located the young man first; they initiated contact and the male agreed to go to the hospital. Deputies retained three firearms for safe-keeping.
