- The Gearhart Post Office advises visitors to maintain social distancing.
Gearhart will rely on a county closure of campgrounds, hotels and short-term rentals to help prevent the spread of the coronavirus.
Councilors unanimously passed a resolution in support of Clatsop County’s decision to close campgrounds, hotels, short-term rentals and homestay lodging at a special meeting Sunday night.
“It’s a rapidly evolving situation, so we’re having to react in real time,” City Attorney Peter Watts said at the meeting.
The closure begins Monday and extends for two weeks.
Councilors and staff met via teleconference Sunday night to address an emergency order imposed by the county.
“With the influx of people coming in to town, our city leaders and our residents were very concerned, and we believe this is a very good step moving forward to help protect our community,” City Administrator Chad Sweet said.
He called the resolution “common sense” and “straightforward.”
The move by Gearhart follows decisions by Astoria and Warrenton to ban recreational camping, homestay lodging and hotel stays in city limits through at least April.
In Manzanita, the city ordered all visitors to vacate within 24 hours.
Gearhart may opt to enact additional rules, City Attorney Peter Watts said. “You as a council decide to adopt your own best practices or restrictions that’s something that could happen at a special city council meeting.”
