A 3D-printer and enhanced interlibrary services are at top of enhancements at the Seaside Library, library director Esther Moberg said at Wednesday’s morning meeting of the Seaside Chamber of Commerce.

Whether it’s making Wi-Fi access, a craft project or getting a book from anywhere across the country, the library has the ability to offer patrons far more than an “off-the-shelf” experience.

Housed at 1131 Broadway for more than 10 years, open 63 hours a week, more than 150,000 people come through the Seaside Library doors, Moberg said. Ten staff serve more than 7,000 card-holders and visitors, many of whom come in daily or weekly.

Moberg showed off the library’s “makerspace” capabilities, defined as “a place in which people with shared interests, especially in computing or technology, can gather to work on projects while sharing ideas, equipment, and knowledge.”

“We’re encouraging people to explore and create,” Moberg said, with classes in button-making, crafting, sewing, knitting and fiber arts.

The library’s second 3-D printer offers patrons the opportunity to download programs or to create their own. A makerspace event will be hosted by “Printmaster Alex” on Saturday, March 21, from 1 to 2:30 p.m.

Working with the Astoria and Warrenton libraries, Moberg said she hopes to soon be linked online so users can check out and return books at any one of their branches. Online requests will also be available, similar to the interlibrary loans Seaside patrons can now request via email or at the desk.
